Chelsea Sink Lille 2-0 in UCL Action
Last year’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) winners were in fine form last night, Tuesday 22 February, as Chelsea took on Lille at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s Kai Havertz got his moment to shine at the eighth minute, punting a header into the corner of the box. In the second half, team-mate Christian Pulisic intercepted a pass from N’Golo Kante at the 63rd minute before launching a kicker over Lille goalkeeper Leo Jardim.
With a comfortable 2-0 victory over the French club, the Blues edge ever closer to reaching the quarter-finals of the UCL.
Coach Thomas Tuchel praised his players after the game, singling out Havertz for his efforts.
“For Kai, I’m very pleased,” he said. “He’s been very strong for several weeks now. He really stepped up. The work rate is immense. The areas of the pitch he covers for us is very good. He is never shy of defending.”
With this round behind them, Chelsea must now prepare themselves for – and keep up their momentum at – the EFL Cup final against Liverpool this Sunday, 27 February.
